Before you know it, you see that life isn’t really about objects, but about people. Specifically, the people who kept you company in a hospital hallway, called just to check on you, and showed up on the hard days in between.
When we are young, most of us spend our lives running and proving ourselves to the world. With time, however, we learn. We see the true value of the people in our lives.
Anyone with a few gray hairs understands how incredibly fast the years fly by. Before you know it, from the moment you first hold a baby in your arms until the day you watch your own child playing, decades have slipped away.
The truth about family is that it is complicated. Emotions get hurt, pride gets in the way, people get frustrated, and connections fray. Yet, there is always a way to make it work. There are people in your life who are willing to forgive your mistakes and keep a seat open for you. These connections matter; do not let them go.
Growing older means understanding one simple truth: time goes by quickly. Eventually, the day comes when no one can return to speak to the departed. Tell your family how you feel while there is still time.
Younger generations should know never to take true love for granted. They should call home more often instead of letting work or trivial worries consume them. Never let grudges build barriers, because there is simply never enough time for that. No one on their deathbed worries about what people thought of them.
Instead, everyone in that final moment wishes for the chance to forgive faster, to love more, and to hold on to their loved ones harder. Do not hesitate to say those things to your family while there is still time.
