Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Drain the potatoes very well.

Return them to the warm pot and let them sit over low heat for about a minute.

This allows excess moisture to evaporate.

This step is especially helpful if you want thick, creamy mashed potatoes rather than watery potatoes.

Step 3 — Add the Butter

Add the butter while the potatoes are still hot.

Mash gently until the butter has completely melted and is incorporated throughout the potatoes.

For extra richness, add a spoonful or two of cream cheese.

Step 4 — Add Only a Little Milk

This is where the texture can easily go wrong.

Don’t pour a large amount of milk or water into the potatoes.

Instead, add warm milk little by little, mixing after each addition.

Stop as soon as the potatoes reach the consistency you like.

You may not need the entire amount.

The goal is creamy potatoes that hold their shape rather than a loose or watery mash.

Step 5 — Season and Serve

Add salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Taste and adjust the seasoning.

For garlic mashed potatoes, add one roasted or gently cooked garlic clove and mash it into the potatoes.

Transfer the finished potatoes to a serving bowl and add a small piece of butter on top.

Serve immediately while they’re warm.
