Silver naturally tarnishes over time by reacting with hydrogen sulfide present in the air. This reaction forms silver sulfide, which is responsible for this unsightly black tarnish.
Fortunately, there’s no need to buy expensive chemicals to polish silverware. Thanks to simple home remedies – and this takes us back to your grandmother’s secrets – your silverware will regain its shine in no time.
Here are the two most effective methods:
Method 1: The aluminum foil and salt trick (The magic method)
This method is ideal for silverware or jewelry without delicate gemstones or pearls. The silver is not rubbed; the chemical process is simply reversed by an electrochemical reaction.
What you need:
- A bowl (glass or plastic, not metal)
- aluminum foil
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of salt
- Boiling water
Here’s how it works:
- Line the entire bowl with aluminum foil (shiny side up).
- Add the salt and place the tarnished silverware on top, so that it is in direct contact with the aluminum foil.
- Pour boiling water over it until the silver is completely covered.
- The “wow” effect: in a few minutes, the black coating disappears as if by magic (and it gives off a slight smell of rotten eggs – that’s the sulfur being released).
- Remove the silverware, rinse it with clean water and polish it dry with a soft cloth.
Method 2: The baking soda or toothpaste method
