Method 2: The baking soda or toothpaste method

Ideal for larger items (such as candlesticks) or jewelry that cannot be soaked.

What you need:

  • Baking powder (or baking soda) or ordinary white toothpaste (  not   gel, not whitening toothpaste)
  • A soft toothbrush or a microfiber cloth

Here’s how it works:

  1. Mix baking soda with a little water to form a thick paste (or use toothpaste directly).
  2. Apply the paste to the silverware and rub it gently with a toothbrush or cloth.
  3. Leave to act for approximately 5 minutes.
  4. Rinse the paste thoroughly with warm water and polish the silverware until dry.

Important note:   If your silver jewelry is set with genuine pearls, amber, or delicate gemstones (such as opals or turquoise), do   not  use  these home remedies. Salt and acids can permanently tarnish the surface of the stones. In this case, only a special silver polishing cloth, available at pharmacies, will be effective.
