The words seemed to empty the room of air.
I saw Noah’s latest test results on the table—the records from the specialist who had assured us that we still had time before making any major decisions.
Logan admitted the doctor had softened the truth.
Noah’s condition was more serious than I had been told. A compatible donor from his biological family might offer the best chance of helping him.
I stared at Logan and my mother.
“You decided I couldn’t handle that?”
“We were trying to protect you,” my mother whispered.
“By lying to me?”
They said they wanted to carry the burden until they had something real to report. They did not want to raise my hopes after every failed lead.
Their explanation did not erase the betrayal.
For weeks, they had held secret meetings, reviewed Noah’s health, and searched for his biological relatives without including me.
“Do you know what I thought when I came here?” I asked.
Neither answered.
“I thought my husband was betraying me with my own mother.”
Logan reached for my hand. I allowed him to hold it, but my fingers remained stiff.
I told them an affair would almost have been easier than discovering they had hidden the truth about our son’s health.
Then I sat down and asked Mr. Hollis how long he had been searching.
He explained that Logan had contacted him after the specialist’s latest call.
“And what have you found?”
Mr. Hollis opened the folder.
“A possible half-sister. She lives in Bakersfield.”
My chest tightened.
She did not yet know Noah existed, but the available records suggested she might agree to contact and preliminary testing.
A sister.
A real person who might be able to help him.
“When were you going to tell me?” I asked.
“Tonight,” Logan said. “That’s why we met here.”
“At a motel?”
He explained that he did not want the meeting at home, where Noah could overhear a frightening or confusing conversation.
The anger inside me remained, but it began changing into something more focused.
We no longer had the luxury of wasting time on blame.
We needed a plan.
