My best friend spent years taking care of my sister with Down syndrome, and then he said a few words that changed everything I thought I knew.

There was   one thing I just couldn’t get over   .

“They never intended to tell you.”

My parents did it too.

“And Rosie knew it…” I said.

Ben nodded.

“I told her after a year. I couldn’t lie to her anymore. She cried. Then she laughed. Finally, she said that she wanted to stay with me anyway.”

She smiled through her tears.

Why didn’t you tell me?

“And Rosie knew it…”

“Rosie asked me not to do it. She said I would fight with my parents, that the family would fall apart. I kept that promise until today, when she asked me to make a new one.”

We both turned to look down the hallway.

I remembered how Ben used to bring Rosie flowers every Tuesday, for no particular reason.

The way she could recite lines from her favorite movie from memory.

Their marriage was never a sham.

His love was true.

But I couldn’t forgive my parents for what they had done.

But I couldn’t forgive.

“I hated you for two whole minutes,” I whispered.

“I would have hated myself for even longer.”

At that precise moment, hurried footsteps approached us down the corridor.

I turned around and saw the doctor approaching.

Something in her gaze told me she was bringing me news I wasn’t ready to hear.

I stood up and leaned against the wall so I wouldn’t fall.

He brought me news I wasn’t prepared for.

The doctor stopped right in front of us.

First he looked at Ben, then at me.

Before he could say anything, the elevator bell rang.

My parents came out with their coats neatly folded in their arms.

They saw us immediately and came closer to catch up with us.

“How are you?” my mother asked.

My parents went out.

“Rosie is stable,” the doctor said. “Both babies are breathing on their own.”

I burst into tears and grabbed Ben’s sleeve.

She was already crying, silent tears sliding down her jaw.

“He did it,” I whispered. “He did it, Ben.”
