“Raymond gave it to us,” Noah finally said.
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“The basket,” Caleb explained. “And he told us the truth.”
Apparently, months earlier, Raymond had invited my sons to his house.
He told them he had been carrying a secret for twenty years.
“There wasn’t a woman who abandoned us on your porch,” Caleb said.
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
“There was a surrogate.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Noah continued carefully.
“Raymond arranged everything.”
I couldn’t speak.
They explained that after my infertility diagnosis and divorce, Raymond had secretly used a private agency and paid for a surrogate.
He had arranged for the twins to be born.
Then he created the story I had believed for twenty years.
The basket.
The porch.
The mysterious disappearance.
Even the path that placed them into foster care.
“He knew you wouldn’t accept the babies if you thought he was giving them to you,” Noah explained. “He wanted you to choose us yourself.”
I felt sick.
Raymond had watched me discover those babies.
He had watched me call the police.
He had watched me visit them in foster care.
And later, he helped me adopt them while pretending he knew nothing.
“He said he trusted your heart,” Caleb whispered.
I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.
I walked into the kitchen and gripped the counter.
Twenty years of memories suddenly looked different.
Every court appearance Raymond attended.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
