2. The “Pay It Forward” Method
If you don’t see an employee right away, look for a fellow shopper who is returning their cart.
- A friendly, “Excuse me, I seem to have forgotten my quarter. Would you mind if I took the one you just got back?” works wonders.
- Nine times out of ten, they will smile, hand it over, and you’ve just shared a lovely, brief human connection. (And if you happen to have a spare dime or nickel, offering it as a trade is a sweet, old-fashioned gesture!)
3. Try a House Key (The Old-Fashioned Trick)
While newer Aldi carts are strictly designed for quarters or specific plastic tokens, some of the older cart models will actually accept a standard house key or a car key inserted into the coin slot. It’s worth a gentle try before you go looking for help!
Long-Term Solutions: Never Forget Again!
Since I am deeply proactive about making my life as smooth and hands-off as possible, I’ve adopted a few simple habits so I never have to worry about this again:
Get a Dedicated Cart Token
You can buy a plastic or metal Aldi cart token (often attached to a keychain) online for just a couple of dollars. I keep one on my main keyring. It’s lightweight, never gets spent, and fits the slot perfectly. Some Aldi stores even give them away at the customer service desk if you just ask!
The “Emergency Stash”
I keep a single quarter taped to the inside of my car’s sun visor, and another in the small zippered pocket of my everyday purse. It’s a tiny, foolproof system that gives me total peace of mind.
The “Coin Purse” Habit
I keep a small, dedicated coin purse in my handbag. Every time I get change from the grocery store or the bank, a quarter goes straight in there. It’s an old-fashioned habit that has saved me more times than I can count!
