For twenty years, I believed I knew exactly how my sons came into my life.

Then one Friday evening, Caleb and Noah placed an old wicker basket on my dining table—and everything I believed began to fall apart.

I recognized it immediately.

The faded blue lining. The broken reed near the handle. The stain near the bottom.

It was the basket they had been lying in when I found them on my porch two decades earlier.

“Where did you get this?” I whispered.

Neither of my sons answered.

And suddenly, I was thirty-one again.

Back then, my marriage had just collapsed.

Doctors had confirmed that because of complications connected to my dwarfism, carrying a child would be extremely difficult. My husband, Ben, responded by packing a bag.

“You can’t give me the family I want,” he said.

Then he left.

That same night, my longtime friend Raymond appeared at my door carrying two pizzas.

He helped pack Ben’s belongings while I sat on the kitchen floor crying.

For the next year, Raymond remained beside me.

I rebuilt my life through my small graphic-design business, while Raymond became the person I could always depend on.

Then one morning, someone knocked on my door.

When I opened it, nobody was there.

Until I heard crying.

I looked down.

Two baby boys were curled together inside a wicker basket, wrapped in a blanket.

I immediately called the police.

Officers searched the neighborhood, questioned neighbors, and tried to find whoever had left the babies.

They found nothing.
